College grants are supplied by the government to help students pay for their college education. Most student grants are given only to students whose incomes are less than a certain amount, or students who are considered minorities, like Hispanic students. There are several Hispanic Grants for those interested in starting college. Some general student grants include the Federal Pell Grants and School Specific Grants. These grants are based solely on financial need, do not consider ethnic background, and are available to anyone under a certain income level. To get one of these grants for college, the student simply needs to fill out their FAFSA application. If the student is eligible for either of these college grants, they will be notified by the FAFSA office or their school.
Some specific grants for Hispanics include the Hispanic College Fund, Sodexo, the Los Padres Foundation, and The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting. The Marriott Scholars Program grant is another grant for Hispanic students. These grants for college are strictly for Hispanic students and need to be applied for. To do so, the student needs to go to each grant association’s website and follow the instructions for filling out the grant application. These websites are listed below. Also, these scholarships and grants have many of the same requirements. In general, the student applying should have a high GPA (in most cases it should be above a 3.0), must be of Hispanic descent, should be enrolling as a full time student, should be a freshman or sophomore in college, and in some cases there are restrictions for majors and future plans. For example, the Marriott Scholars Program requires that students applying for the grant pursue a career in hospitality. Another example is the Ford Blue Oval Scholarship. This scholarship is only for Hispanic students pursuing careers in certain fields. Some states have their own grants and financial resources for Hispanic college students. Collegescholarships.org lists several grants by state, and several other grants available to students regardless of state residency. Some other grants and scholarships can be found on the Hispanic College Fund’s website.
